From the Andes to the Alps: Why we use alpaca wool for our hats

At HAE, we were shaped by the Alps. The mountains teach us what endures: simplicity, authenticity, and respect for nature. This attitude is reflected in everything we do. For us, true innovation often means returning to our roots. That's why we rely on alpaca wool, one of the world's most extraordinary natural fibers.

The origin of alpaca wool

High up in the Andes, between 3,500 and 5,000 meters above sea level, alpacas have lived for millennia in an environment that could hardly be harsher. Hot days, icy nights, and constant winds create a climate that few creatures can endure. To survive in these extremes, the alpaca has developed a fur that retains heat, remains breathable, and yet feels as light as a feather. In Andean culture, alpaca wool has been a symbol of security, closeness to nature, and resilience for centuries. These qualities fit perfectly with our philosophy and life in the Alps. It's like two mountain worlds meet here: the Andes and the Alps, connected by a fiber that has provided warmth for centuries.

The special properties of alpaca wool

Alpaca wool is up to 35 percent warmer than sheep's wool, yet lighter and significantly softer. It contains no lanolin, making it hypoallergenic and ideal for sensitive skin. Its hollow fiber structure ensures it insulates without overheating. It warms when it's cold and remains breathable when it warms up. Alpaca wool is odor-resistant, moisture-repellent, and durable. In short, it's a masterpiece of nature, long before high-tech textiles existed.

Sustainability and uncolored naturalness

Our Outlander Alpaca Hat is made from 100 percent undyed alpaca wool , just as it comes from nature. No dyeing, no chemicals, no additives. Each hat features the natural color palette of the alpacas, in our case a dark brown. This project is the result of a collaboration between HAE and two master's students, Larissa and Line, from the Circular Economy and Sustainability program at Bern University of Applied Sciences. Together, we pursued one goal: to develop a compostable hat.

In addition to the wool, the yarn and the woven label are also made from compostable materials. Under the right industrial conditions, the hat can decompose completely within five years without leaving any residue. We are aware that industrial composting is not yet available everywhere, even in Switzerland. Please only dispose of the hat in the compost pile if the appropriate infrastructure is in place. Until then, the Outlander Alpaca Hat stands as a symbol of what is possible when you rethink sustainable fashion.

Care instructions for alpaca wool

Alpaca wool is easy to care for if treated properly. To keep your hat soft, shape-retaining, and comfortable for a long time, we recommend the following:

  1. Handwash: Wash the hat by hand in cold or lukewarm water. Use a mild wool detergent and avoid rubbing or wringing to prevent the fibers from matting.
  2. Gentle drying: After washing, gently squeeze out excess moisture, but do not wring it out. Then let it dry flat on a clean towel. Avoid direct sunlight or near a radiator.
  3. Do not machine wash. Even on the wool cycle, a washing machine can generate excessive movement. We recommend hand washing only.
  4. Careful storage: Store the hat in a dry, well-ventilated place. If storing it over the summer, a cotton bag will help keep moths at bay without compromising the wool's breathability.

With proper care, the natural structure of the alpaca wool is preserved and the hat retains its shape, softness and color for many years.

The HAE philosophy

For us, the decision to use alpaca wool isn't a trend, but rather a return to what has always worked in the mountains. We've been working with alpaca wool for six years. It's one of many honest materials, with timeless design and quality that lasts for generations.

We develop products for people who are at home in nature, for all who understand that true sustainability begins with awareness. The Outlander Alpaca Hat isn't just a hat. It's a statement for naturalness, circular thinking, and a future in harmony with the environment.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about alpaca wool

Why is alpaca wool more sustainable than other types of wool?

Alpacas have soft hooves that protect the soil, and they cut grass rather than pluck it. This keeps vegetation intact. Their wool is completely biodegradable and requires no chemical treatment.

What does “undyed” mean for the Outlander Alpaca Hat?

Undyed means the natural color of the wool is retained. No dyes, no chemicals, just the authentic natural tones of the alpaca.

Can I really compost the Outlander Alpaca Hat?

Yes, but only under industrial conditions. The hat is made from fully compostable materials, but the process requires a controlled environment. In many countries, this infrastructure is currently still being developed. Find out where you can compost it.

How does alpaca wool feel?

Alpaca wool is incredibly soft, non-itchy, and pleasant on the skin. It's hypoallergenic because it doesn't contain lanolin, and it remains comfortable even in changing temperatures.

How do I properly care for an alpaca wool hat?

It's best to handwash in cold water with a mild wool detergent. Let it dry flat, do not wring, do not tumble dry, and store in a well-ventilated area for longer periods.
